FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO contact with flammable substances. NO contact with water, combustible and organic compounds.
In case of fire in the surroundings: only use carbon dioxide, dry sand or powder. NO hydrous agents.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion on contact with water or steam, fuels and organic compounds.

In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Burning sensation. Cough. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Laboured breathing. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain. Skin burns. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Wear protective gloves when administering first aid. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns.
Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in vermiculite, earth, dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. NEVER direct water jet on liquid. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Airtight. Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

IMPORTANT DATA
PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
PALE YELLOW TO COLOURLESS, FUMING LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating above 460C and on contact with acids or acid fumes producing very toxic fumes of hydrogen fluoride (see ICSC 0283) and hydrogen bromide (see ICSC 0282). Reacts violently with fuels and organic compounds, hydrogen containing material (such as ammonia, acetic acid, grease, paper) causing fire and explosion hazard. Reacts explosively with water or steam to produce toxic and corrosive fumes of hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen bromide. Reacts with all known elements, except nitrogen, oxygen and rare gases.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.1 ppm as TWA; (ACGIH 2004).
ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Exposure may result in death.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
May cause fluorosis due to formation of hydrogen fluoride, further see ICSC 0283.

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA

NOTES
Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
