Combat fire from a sheltered position.

Inhalation Cough. Shortness of breath.
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain.
Face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Vacuum spilled material. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
UNSTABLE COLOURLESS DELIQUESCENT CRYSTALS.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance may polymerize at temperatures above 122C. The substance decomposes on warming above 49C, on contact with acids, bases and moisture producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides and cyanides. Reacts acids, strong oxidants, strong reducing agents and water causing explosion and toxic hazard. Attacks various metals.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 2 mg/m as TWA; (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: (Inhalable fraction) 1 mg/m; Peak limitation category: II(2); skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin (Sh); Pregnancy risk group: C; (DFG 2004).
ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the liver.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization.

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA

NOTES
Optimum pH for storage of solutions is around 4; solutions can be stored in glass provided they are stabilized with phosphoric, acetic, sulfuric or boric acid. Other boiling points: 140C at 2.5 kPa. Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect. Do NOT take working clothes home. Term cyanamide is also used to designate calcium cyanamide. Card has been partly updated in October 2005.
